Sun Damage treatment overview

Sun damage is caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.  There are 3 different types of UV, but only two of those, UVA and UVB, make it to the surface of planet earth.  Both of them cause sun damage by chronically damaging the skin cells DNA.  The commonest symptoms are of freckles which can become large and irregular (solar lentigos).  Sometimes, red crusty keratoses called solar keratosis form.  In severe cases, skin cancer might develop.  The sun also causes thickening of the collagen and increased wrinkling or photo-ageing.

Sun Damage treatment options

The symptoms of sun damage such as lentigos or keratoses are easily treated with superficial therapy such as cryotherapy (freezing spray).  Wrinkles or age lines can be treated with botulinum toxin.  Skin cancer is also highly treatable but is covered in the skin cancer section.  High-factor sunblock is recommended to protect against the harmful effects of both UVA and UVB radiation.

Remember, although the effects of sun damage are not reversible, the cosmetic effects can certainly be greatly improved with the appropriate treatment.  There is no need to suffer with sun-induced keratoses, lentigos or photo-ageing.  Get in touch and let one of our consultants treat your condition.
